I went back and checked the increase in price of gold, coca-cola stock and berkshire hathaway from 1973 till now.
Gold was fetching ~$60/ounce in 1973 and now it fetches $1664/ounce. Coca-cola was going for about $126/share before splits and dividends.
Split adjusted Coca-cola has compounded by 11.72% from 1973 till now excluding dividends. Gold has compounded at an average rate of 8.7% from 1973 till now.
If one put $1 in gold in 1973, they would have had $25 in assets now. If one put $1 in Coca-cola now, they would have had $75 now excluding dividends. Berkshire is a different beast altogether. $1 in Berkshire would have been worth $1148 dollars far outpacing gold.

Interestingly, if one had put one's money in SP500 index, $1 would have been worth $36 now. This produces annual growth of 9.85% including dividends. Most of the growth in SP500 happened between 1982 - 2000.
